Edmonton Summer Rock Cirkus 1979 - Wild Whisper "Feel the Beat"

Boy I had fun with this layout!  What a trip down memory lane!!

On August 23, 1979 Edmonton hosted the first outdoor concert in Alberta, at the brand new Commonwealth Stadium.  There was a lot of worry among stadium officials about having this concert in the new building, and the promoters weren't sure just how it would go over with Albertans. 

Well.... it was a stunning success with over 50,000 music lovers showing up to rock & roll... and my husband and I were two of them!!!  Peter Frampton & Heart were the headliners, but it was the Canadian band, Trooper, that stole the show.  Their version of the "Summertime Blues" had the whole audience on their feet.

Tickets were... wait for this... $20!  Oh yeah... things were good back in the 70's!  

To start with, I used this piece of paper from "Feel the Beat", and covered it with Glass Bead Gel through a 12"x12" star stencil.

Here's a close up of the gel... I love its grainy texture.

After gluing down the focal piece that I made at this Wild Whisper post, I splattered the background with watered down gesso.  I was very liberal with it and was going for big splashes.  The brush I used was this one by Tim Holtz.

Continuing on, I used the July sketch from Creative Scrapbooker Magazine to lay out my photos.

I liked the inner border shown on the sketch, so I drew a freehand one with a black marker and added musical notes all around.  

All embellishments for the layout came from the "Feel the Beat" Ephemera pack.

Creating a layout like this is why I love scrapbooking so much.  I was literally transported while I worked on it, to a very hot, sunny, August day in 1979, when Edmonton came alive to the beat of Rock & Roll and I was there!

PPC107 Playing in Paradise - Sketch

Wow!  It's Friday again!  Don't the days fly by??  Today at Playing in Paradise, our challenge is being hosted by Allison, which means we have a cool sketch to use for inspiration this week!

 

I'm still busy working on my Easter box cards and this week's challenge had me finishing up #2.  The sketch was so helpful when it came to embellishing the front of the card and I love the way it ended up looking.  

 

 

I used the beautiful Prima Firefly Shadows paper to make this card and some pretty Dazzle borders to frame it.  I like the dazzles for little projects like this because they are just the right scale.  The Firefly paper is such gorgeous paper and the colours are perfect for Spring projects!  The die cuts are from G45's "Place in Time".  Don't you just love the cute litte flat flowers I've added to the flower cluster?  They are a product from Jesse James Buttons called "Flats Spring Fling" and I just think they are the cutest things!

 

 

If you have trouble getting your corners to look tidy, here's a little mini-tutorial on how I trimmed the Dazzles on the front of my card.

 

 

The top two pictures show how you lay the two strips of Dazzles onto your card.  Don't press them down too hard at the corner, in order that you can lift them up, as I have done in the bottom left hand picture.  Once you have them lifted up, take your scissors and cut from the outside corner, in, at a 45 degree angle.  Then peel off the loose pieces from where you've cut, lay your Dazzles back down on the card, and your corner will be mitred.

PPC102 Playing in Paradise Sketch

Good morning everyone!  This week at the Playing in Paradise challenge, Allison has given us a really great sketch to work with. 

 

 

I decided to take this sketch and see how many layers I could add to it,

while still keeping the original design.

 

 

It was pretty easy to add layers with the beautiful paper line Serenade by Bo Bunny!  I tucked a few coordinating mats behind and then layered on the top with my image and 

lots of fussy cut flowers from the paper line.  The little yellow flowers I left flat, but the burgundy ones, I crumpled up to break down the paper fibers and then

ruffled them so they had some dimension. 

 

 

The gold roses were made using Spellbinders Shapeability die "Bitty Blossoms".  I really love this die.  Flowers are very easy to make with it.  After I cut the roses from a piece of yellow Serenade paper, I painted them with some glimmering gold paint.  Added some lace and a tulle bow,

plus some red "bling", and I was done!

 

 

You really have to go over to the Playing in Paradise challenge this week and see what the rest of the design team did with it ...  let me tell you ... there's some awesome cards, and even a layout! 

Just goes to show you, how versatile a sketch can be!
